Thomas Demand

At first glance, you see this as a photograph. But is it? Take a closer look. Are they leafs? Is that glass? The answer is no. This is a photograph of a model of a photograph. Created by German artist Thomas Demand, who painstakingly cut and folded thousands upon thousands of pieces of card in order to create this life-size model which references the outside of a bar where a brutal murder had taken place in Burbach, Germany. These life size models are usually destroyed once the photograph has been taken, however, they have occasionally been exhibited as three-dimensional works in their own right. It is this exhibiting of them that led me to look into Thomas Demand and his paper models as technically, they become an installation when exhibited, and I myself am creating one. He also created ‘Clearing’ and ‘Grotto’ which can be seen below as well as a video of Thomas Demand talking about the ideas behind his works.
